Jannat House is Arabic for Paradise House. It is an old merchant's house bought by the Swede Hans Frejd in 1986. It was meant to be a private paradise for Hans with a guest house for his family and friends. Over time, Hans and his family became more and more engaged with the people of Lamu and their culture. His visits became more frequent, and his family and friends followed suit. Jannat House became a bustling guest house offering employment to a number of people.
Consequently, Hans decided in the year 2000 to upgrade the house to a fully fledged hotel. Today, this private piece of paradise is open to all.
The upgrade of Jannat to a complete hotel did not change the vision of beeing as invited to a family home for the visitor, rather it was reinforced with a clear mission for our business: We shall offer you, our guest, a welcoming and genuine meeting-place which leaves you with memories for life.
At Jannat House there is room for quiet conversations as well as energetic conferences. Our dedicated staff combine the highest industry standards with easy-going manners, professional service with warm personal engagement. At this hotel with a difference, the guest is in the centre.
Jannat House is located in the heart of Lamu Old Town at Lamu Island. It is a haven of calmness just a short walk from the busy waterfront and main street. Jannat House is made up of three ancient Swahili houses which have been carefully refurbished and it is now an exciting modern hotel with 16 personally styled rooms. It has a fully functional restaurant and bar, green shaded gardens, as well as a swimming pool. The hotel boasts several relaxing terraces equipped with traditional divans and comfortable pillows where you can relax and enjoy the sea view or the sunset and sunrise.
The hotel has been under new management since November 2013. We work hard with development and maintainence of services and functions. It has payed off in terms of an increasing number of guests and partnerships with travel agents and group organizers. And we receive many positive reviews on travel sites and private feed-back. Thank you, we are so proud!
Sustainability is a key element in our view on tourism. Our restaurant offers locally sourced products grown organically whenever available. Excursions and events all aim to bring you closer to the people of Lamu, their culture, and the natural environment of the island and its surroundings. We want the development of Lamu to go hand in hand with the preservation of its natural environment.
Our closeness to the people of Lamu will introduce you to a rich culture and contribute to positive interactions and understanding between different cultures. We provide employment around the year to a number of local people, whether it is high touristic season or low. We have a number of activities and excursions with local partners which you will enjoy.
